FL 8.3 REQUEST TO MAKE MODIFICATIONS BECAUSE OF DISABILITY

EXPLANATION

The Federal Fair Housing Law, as amended in 1988, recognizes handicapped individuals as a protected class. Landlords may not:

Refuse to rent to handicapped individuals
Establish different rules for use of the premises for handicapped individuals
Impose different rental charges for handicapped individuals
"Steer" handicapped individuals to a specific unit or section of the complex because of the individual being handicapped

Additionally, the tenant has the right to modify the dwelling unit, as well as entrances to the building, in order to make the unit accessible and habitable for the tenant.

You have the right to sue in Federal Court or to file a complaint through HUD to have the matter investigated. Any person who feels that he/she has been a victim can file a complaint no later than one year after the alleged violation occured. You can file the complaint in person at your local HUD office or by mail and send it to:
